RRR is an upcoming Indian Telugu-language period action drama film directed by S. S. Rajamouli, and produced by D. V. V. Danayya of DVV Entertainments. The film stars N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt and Olivia Morris while Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson and Alison Doody play supporting roles. It is a fictional story about two Indian revolutionaries, Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Rama Rao), who fought against the British Raj and Nizam of Hyderabad respectively.

Rajamouli scripted the film from the original story written by K. V. Vijayendra Prasad. He came across reading stories about the incidents happened in the lives of the Indian revolutionaries and connected the coincidence between them. The thought about how the Indian revolutionaries became friends during the course of each other insisted Rajamouli to make this film, while also added that it explores the blind spot in the history and also to showcase the true glory of freedom fighters.[4] However, it took the writers six months to complete the final draft.

The film was formally announced in March 2018, with the launch and the principal photography of the film began on November 2018 in Hyderabad. The film was shot extensively across India, with few sequences and Ukraine and Bulgaria. The film's soundtrack and background score is composed by M. M. Keeravani with cinematography handled by K. K. Senthil Kumar and editing done by A. Sreekar Prasad. Sabu Cyril was the film's production designer, whilst V. Srinivas Mohan supervised the visual effects for the film.

Made on a budget of 400 crore (US$50 million),[5] RRR was initially scheduled for theatrical release on 30 July 2020, which has been deferred due to production delays and followed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The film is now scheduled to release on 13 October 2021 in multiple languages including Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada.[6]

Development

In October 2017, S. S. Rajamouli announced two projects after Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), which will be produced by D. V. V. Danayya under DVV Entertainment and K. L. Narayanan.[7] Rajamouli prioritised his work on the former, which was touted to be a social drama film, and insisted to begin production on K. L. Narayanan's project once he finishes Danayya's proposed project.[7][15] In November 2017, Rajamouli shared a picture with N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan through his social media handles,[16][17] hinting their inclusion in the film.[18][19] It was officially confirmed by Rajamouli on March 2018,[20][21][22] with the tentative title RRR.[a] K. V. Vijayendra Prasad gave the original story and Rajamouli scripted the film, which extensively undergone for six months.[24] In September 2018, screenwriter Sai Madhav Burra, was announced that he will pen the dialogues for the film in the primary language (Telugu),[25][26][27] whereas dialogues in other versions were written by Madhan Karky (Tamil),[28][29] Varadaraju Chikkaballapura (Kannada), Mamkombu Gopalakrishnan (Malayalam) and Riya Mukherjee (Hindi).[30] Rajamouli roped in his norm technicians: M. M. Keeravani as the music director, K. K. Senthil Kumar as the director of photography, A. Sreekar Prasad as the film editor, Sabu Cyril as the production designer, V. Srinivas Mohan handling the visual effects supervision and Rama Rajamouli as the costume designer.[30][31] Nick Powell was the stunt director for the film, and handled the choreography for the climax action sequences in the film.[32][33]

Prior to the start of film production,[34] both Rama Rao and Charan had attended a special workshop during mid-October 2020, in order to train physically and intensively for their roles in the film.[35][36] In March 2019, Rajamouli revealed that the film's core idea came from The Motorcycle Diaries (2004), saying that he was fascinated by "how a character named Che transforms into a revolutionary called Guevara and have structured the characters of his protagonists around a common point, on similar lines".[37] Charan and Rama Rao play the younger versions of Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem respectively. The plot explores their stay in Delhi of the 1920s before they begin the fight for their country, but the story is entirely fictitious.[38] He added that there had a coincidence between the two Telugu tribal leaders and the events surrounding over them.[39] The thought of what could have been the course of history had Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem become friends during their formative years, inspired Rajamouli to make this film.[40] The tentative title RRR,[a] was later confirmed to be the film's official title as Rajamouli said that a universal title across the languages was essential for a film of such scale.[41][42]

I was thrilled to explore the blind spot in the history of Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem for a cinematic spectacle. He claimed that since there were no records about what happened in the lives of these freedom fighters when they were away from their homes, it has given him a lot of creative freedom. There are gaps in the lives of these legendary freedom fighters that we don’t know about. We don’t know what happened in their lives in these years. It is through this fictional story we’d like to show what could have happened in their lives and what would have happened if they met and bonded, which is what RRR is about.

— S. S. Rajamouli, about the scripting of RRR.[43]

Casting

The film marks the Telugu debut of Ajay Devgan and Alia Bhatt.[44][45] Bhatt was paired opposite Charan while Devgn would have an extended cameo.[46] He also shot for the film without receiving any renumeration as a gratitude to the director.[47] Parineeti Chopra was initially rumoured to play the female lead opposite Rama Rao,[48][49] before British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones was signed to be paired opposite Rama Rao.[50] Tamil actor Samuthirakani was roped in to play a crucial role.[11][51] Jones left the project in April 2019,[52] citing personal reasons[53] and Olivia Morris was announced as the female lead during November 2019.[54][55][56] The same month, Hollywood actor Ray Stevenson (of Thor fame), was cast as the lead antagonist Scott,[57] with Alison Doody roped in to play Lady Scott.[10][58] Chakri, Varun Buddhadev and Spandan Chaturvedi were the child artists for the film, reprising the younger versions of the characters played Charan, Rama Rao and Bhatt.[59]

Rahul Ramakrishna was seen in a supporting role in the film,[69] along with Chatrapathi Sekhar[70] and Rajeev Kanakala.[71] Yash,[72] Varun Dhawan[73] and Sanjay Dutt[73] were rumoured for a key role in the film, but was confirmed to be baseless. Chiranjeevi and Aamir Khan were reported to give narrations for the film in Telugu and Hindi languages.[74]

In November 2019, the team headed to Ramoji Film City, to film two key sequences and a song featuring Rama Rao and Charan.[114] The film's official social media handle tweeted that 70% of the film's shoot has been wrapped as of November.[115] Rama Rao headed to Modakondamma Temple forest area in PaderuAraku road to film few a 5-day sequence in December 2019.[116] In January 2020, Charan began shooting for the film at the Vikarabad forest region were an extensive night shoot was filmed for a week.[117] Ajay Devgn joined the film's shooting schedule on 21 January 2020 and wrapped his portions during February.[118][119] The filming was halted due to COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.[120] After the Andhra Pradesh government granted permission to resume film shooting during June 2020, the team planned for a 2-day trial shoot,[121] but was halted following the spike in COVID-19 cases in the state.[122] The filming was resumed in October 2020 following the ease of COVID-19 lockdown in India,[123][124] and Rajamouli shot for the promotional teaser for the film, titled "Ramaraju for Bheem", during this schedule.[125][126]

Controversy

Controversies surrounding Alia Bhatt

In June 2020, Alia Bhatt was trolled by the netizens, following her condolence message posted during the death of Sushant Singh Rajput on 14 June 2020.[223] His death, invited the debate of nepotism in Bollywood, and a section of netizens and Rajput's fans shared video clips where Bhatt spoke dismissively about Rajput in a chat show, and accused her for promoting nepotism.[223] The fans further sent death threats to Rajamouli asking him to replace Bhatt with another actress.[224] Eventually, rumours surrounding Alia Bhatt being ousted from the film, surfaced around the corner, when the trailer of Sadak 2 (which featured her as the female lead) became the second-most disliked video worldwide and the most-disliked film trailer on YouTube.[225] Many fans demanded Rajamouli to replace Bhatt with other female lead, as her presence in the film may trigger negativity,[226] and Priyanka Chopra too was rumoured to be the frontrunner to replace Bhatt,[227] following the backlash.[228][229] However, Alia Bhatt denied the news, and stated that she was very much part of the film.[230] Rajamouli too revealed that he casted Bhatt on the basis of her talent and not on her lineage.[231]

Characterisation issues

On 22 October 2020 a teaser trailer was released, titled "Ramaraju for Bheem", coinciding with Komaram Bheem's 119th birth anniversary.[232] A controversy was sparked over portrayal of Bheem's character.[233][234] In the video, Rama Rao was seen wearing a skull cap, applying kohl on to his eyes and appearing dressed as a Muslim man.[235] Members from the tribal community of Adilabad and a few netizens have opposed this representation of an Adivasi leader from the Gond tribe, as a Muslim man.[236][237] On 27 October 2020 (80th death anniversary of Komaram Bheem), during a by-election campaign at Dubbaka, Bharatiya Janata Party's Telangana president Bandi Sanjay Kumar warned Rajamouli,[238] and threatened that his cadre will vandalise the theatres and his properties, if he intended to hurt the sentiments of Hindus.[239][240] Later, in an interview with Film Companion's Anupama Chopra in July 2021, writer Vijayendra Prasad clarified about the Bheem's appearance in the film. He told that "He is being haunted by the Nizam of Hyderabad and tried to escape the people of Nizam police. So, his portrayal as a Muslim is justified in this case, as he would not get assualted by the people."[241]
