Comment[edit]

How come th epopulation mentioned in this article (288 000) is smaller than that of Andaman islands alone (315 000) ? --Kummi 20:42, 24 July 2005 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I do not think the following statement is correct: "It became an Indian union territory (UT) along with the declaration of India's independence in 1947."

The original Constitution of India says in the First Schedule, Part II: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands...The territory which immediately before the commencement of this Constitution was comprised in the Chief Commissioner's Province of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

This implies that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands was a Chief Commissioner's Province between 1947 and 1950, not a Union Territory. --Manojb 09:58, 14 February 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Austrian colony?[edit]

de:Andamanen und Nikobaren states, that the Andamans and Nicobar Islands were an Austrian colony between 1778 and 1783. Does anyone know more about it? Gugganij 11:27, 22 March 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Danish rather than Austro-Hungarian[edit]

The Austrians claimed the Nicobar Islands as a colony, but this claim was not effectuated as the Nicobars were already a colony of Denmark-Norway. Danes and Norwegians landed their at 1755, and they eventualy left in 1868, followed by Brits in 1868. The colony was supplied with colonists, soldiers and resources from the nearby Danish-Norwegian colony of Trankebar (colony from 1620-1845). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.135.32.57 (talk) 10:15, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Official Languages?[edit]

The languages mentioned on the page as official languages of the ANI are not OFFICIAL. There are significant populations that speak these languages there but the union territory's government does not recognize them as OFFICIAL. The Union Government recognises 22 languages in the 8th Schedule but Nicobarese etc are not on that list. So what list is this refering to? Languages recognised/allowed in legal proceedings are not necessarily OFFICIAL languages —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 203.199.177.246 (talk) 08:33, 8 January 2007 (UTC).Reply[reply]

The official languages are Hindi and English as per the Report of the Commissioner for linguistic minorities.[1] -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 10:58, 12 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Proposed merging[edit]

This article has very much in parallel with the Andaman Islands article. The two groups of islands have very much a common history. I saw that each one has much useful information which the other does not, and a reader getting to only one would miss the information availalbe in the other. .Adam Keller 08:51, 23 April 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I don't really have a problem with merging, though I am concerned that a combined article could get quite large. I presume that, to be consistent, the Nicobar Islands article should be merged as well. Given that much of the history does overlap, there are significant differences in (for example) ecology and ethnology. A combined article would need to have, as well as a section on common history and current administrative status, two large separate sections on the two island groups where they differ.
An alternative would be to keep three separate articles but tidy them up considerably and move information from one to another where appropriate to minimise overlap. Maias 04:19, 26 April 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The Andamans and the Nicobars are both distinct island groups that ought to be treated separately. ANI is a political entity and needs to be retained unless you also delete all the other articles about states and territories of India. Esquimo 08:45, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The best way is as the editors suggest above to keep three separate articles and linked them with each other. The Andamans and the Nicobars are distinct island groups and having different stock of natives.Lustead 16:49, 23 August 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The name "Nicobar"[edit]

The name Nicobar is not from the Malay (allegedly "the land of the [naked] people"). It may be from Tamil though... I found a reference to that (with sources) here:

"From the thirteenth century, Arab geographers and historians began to call these islands Nakawari, Necuveram and Nakawara,
clearly derived from the Tamil Nakkavaram (Chakravarti 1994:23)".

Opinions, anyone? Martijn →!?← 15:38, 9 November 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Education[edit]

Information on education is availaible on the official website at http://www.and.nic.in/C_charter/education/dir-edn.htm

But the question is whether we can copy any material without it being copyright infringement. I think the statistics should be copyable, albeit with different prose. But I am not sure. If anybody is sure about it, please add it to the article.Thanks.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 11:11, 9 July 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Languages in infobox[edit]

It is norm to mention official and spoken languages if need be. No need of mentioning a dominant language in infobox. Have removed it for time being. Comments welcome.Magentic Manifestations (talk) 11:32, 2 January 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The case is different for Andamans as the Government itself in its official website provided a separate Dominant Language segment owing to multiple factors which need not be stated here. I had; in my edit provided the citation link to the actual National Informatics Centre website. -Thank You Mouryan (talk) 11:48, 2 January 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Paleolithic people? Clarification needed.[edit]

In the 4th paragraph, there is a rather irritating and possibly misleading statement.

That statement - ?The Andaman Islands are home to the only known Paleolithic people, the Sentinelese people, who have no contact with any other people.? needs clarification.

That particular term occurs in this page only. It is nowhere seen on the page of Sentinelese people.

What does Paleolithic people mean? A subset of humanity that follows paleolithic lifestyle Paleolithic Lifestyle? A genetically unique subgroup of humanity? Or, perhaps a isolated group of human that survived throughout the paleolithic age right in this single location and are now known as sentinelese people? No matter what, sentinelese would hardly be classified as the only unique group. Plenty of genetically isolated subgroups to go around. Or, modern day nuts who want to emulate paleoloths.

Is the term Paleolithic people even a scientifically acceptable term to define a tribal community such as this?

The link that it cites, http://www.and.nic.in/andaman/tribes.php gives a 404 Server Error.

Someone needs to fix this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fishoel (talk • contribs) 00:49, 12 September 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Waves[edit]

Regarding:

"...warned them to evacuate from large waves that follow large earthquakes."

Isn't it about a retracting sea, rather than waves? Wouldn't it be too late if the actual wave is visible?

(There is the same statement in History of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.)

Marathas[edit]

I have removed the following section as no other reliable source exists [yet] supporting the claim that Marathas ever made the Island their base
The islands became a temporary shipping port of the Maratha Empire and its navy in the 17th century. The Maratha admiral Kanhoji Angre established a basic naval dominance in the islands and played a role in the annexation of the islands to India.[1]

the cited source is not WP:RS. it is a random website by non-experts in history ChandlerMinh (talk) 06:34, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Srinivas jambhekar: Hi, it is regarding this addition. While I'd appreciate your efforts, the sources you've used are not reliable as @ChandlerMinh: has pointed out in March 2023. As you all know Andaman & Nikobar is the part of India. You will be surprised to know that the Andaman & nikobar is part of Great Himalayan series( Young folded mountain). They were formed as a result of tectonics movement of Plates (Indo-Australian plate and asian plate).

This was how these islands were formed and they became populated during the freedom struggle against British empire by the India.British constructed a prison on the island(In india known as KAALE PANI KI SAZA),so that no prisoner can come back from there.British started carrying the people to the prison who led the revolution against them, one of the popular prisoner was Veer Savarkar. Most of the prisoner survived their till India got the freedom.
