The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! is a Flash-animated musical preschool television series featuring Martin Short as the voice of The Cat in the Hat, that premiered on Treehouse TV in Canada on August 7, 2010, also airing on YTV in Canada on weekday mornings from 2012 to 2013,[2] and on PBS Kids and PBS Kids Preschool in the US on September 6, 2010. It also aired on CITV and Tiny Pop in the UK, and Disney Junior in India.[3] The show is based on Random House's Beginner Books franchise and The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library,[4] itself based on the 1957 children's book The Cat in the Hat.

The show was produced by Portfolio Entertainment, Random House Children Entertainment, and Collingwood O'Hare Productions, in conjunction with KQED, PBS, Treehouse TV, and Kids' CBC.[5] The first season has 40 half-hour episodes and ended on September 17, 2012.[6]

In early 2012, the show was renewed a second season of 20 episodes, which premiered on September 10, 2012. However, episode 2 of the second season began airing on September 24, 2012. The second season ended on June 23, 2015. In September 2015, the series was canceled after two seasons.

A year later, the show resumed production. In September 2016, the show was renewed nine months later for a third and final season with 20 episodes. The third season premiered on March 2, 2018.[7] In September 2018, the show was canceled again, ending after three seasons, and the series finale aired on October 14, 2018.

Premise

In the show, The Cat in the Hat leads neighbors Nick and Sally (and sometimes the Fish and Thing One and Thing Two) on a variety of adventures in his "Thinga-ma-jigger".

Researcher Natalie Jones stated that the "Thinga-ma-jigger" is a Seussian contraption that can sprout wings, fly, pontoons, booster rockets, change size and do just about anything else necessary to further the adventure (and accompanied by a rock tune composed by Harold Beckett under the title of "Traveling Song" that appears in each episode), which is prompted by a question posed by either Nick or Sally at the beginning of each episode,[5] which inevitably leads them around the world to make natural science discoveries.[6]

Like other PBS Kids-produced shows (such as Curious George and Sid the Science Kid), the show focuses on introducing preschoolers to various science and learning concepts.
