Question from BartlettLivingston (17:52, 11 November 2023)[edit]
Thanks so much! Friends have recommended Wikipedia editing to me. Looking forward to learning more. Cheers! --BartlettLivingston (talk) 17:52, 11 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@BartlettLivingston Great! I've left a welcome template on your talk page, hopefully it'd help! Justiyaya 08:56, 12 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi Nameless245, could you be a bit more specific? Are you trying to modify a template that would change all pages using the template, or the information given to the template by a specific page? It would also be useful to know which page you are referring to. Justiyaya 00:18, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from Skvjold (20:45, 14 November 2023)[edit]
All feedback welcome! And thank you in advance. --Skvjold (talk) 20:45, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi there @Skvjold, I don't think that's a really good idea right now as the draft needs significant cleanup as for it to be acceptable under a few guidelines, namely WP:BLP, Wikipedia's quite serious about having almost everything about a living person referenced on the site, and the Life and Career section is a bit short on references right now. More significantly, I think that there may be potentially notability issues (does the subject have two reliable secondary sources providing significant coverage?) and a over reliance of primary sources.
Do you have a conflict of interest with the subject? The images on the article appear to be uploaded by the subject's account the same day you started the article. Justiyaya 02:22, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for this! I will look into WP:BLP and get my head around secondary sources.
I know the subject - we were colleagues years ago - and I asked him to upload images for the article. Would that be considered a conflict of interest? Skvjold (talk) 19:16, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would declare one, you could do so by placing
((UserboxCOI|1=Scott Henderson)) on your userpage Justiyaya 03:39, 16 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Does declaring this mean the article will automatically be rejected? I've added the notice to my user page, along with explanation that we worked together twenty years ago. Skvjold (talk) 19:06, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Skvjold Nope! COI editing is allowed, reviewers may reject articles if it is undeclared (paid undeclared COI editing is against the terms of service and unpaid without declaration is against guidelines) but generally they should accept and reject articles mostly normally if it is.
The most significant issue right now is notability, could you give me two reliable, secondary sources that provide significant coverage to the subject so that I'm sure you are not wasting your time? Unreferenced information could be removed, tone could be fixed, but if the subject does not meet Wikipedia's inclusion criteria of multiple, reliable, secondary sources providing significant coverage, the article still would not be published.
Making a new article here is a really frustrating process, and often discourages a lot of people, if you really want to do this, good luck! There's a bunch of other tasks here also if you want to try them. Justiyaya 02:04, 22 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
How do these look as secondary sources with significant coverage of the subject:
- Deconstructing Product Design: Exploring the Form, Function, Usability : Scott’s designs are featured in this book, and Scott is quoted throughout as an expert on what makes these designs successful and impactful
@Skvjold It won't make a really strong case. Interviews are usually questionable as a secondary source and I was unable to access the google books section but I'm assuming there would be minimal biographical coverage but more so discussion on the design. I don't see much more in the draft at a glance as well. You could ask for a second opinion at the teahouse but I not really confident that the subject is notable. Some months back you offered to help with Chinese subjects. So, I came across a really poorly written article on the Women's International Democratic Federation. A bunch of editors jumped in to help me improve it. At any rate, we discovered a ton of redlinked women. One, Liu Chin-yang (China) was the vice-chairman of a commission of women who went to investigate conditions during the Korean War.[1] I think she is zh:刘清扬, in part because the Chinese article says she was active with Deng Yingchao, who was definitely involved with WIDF and because other sources say she was a member of the All-China Women's Federation, which was a WIDF affiliate. I have found numerous biographies in English, (you probably have to remove the .mx, but it won't let me because I am in Mexico)[2],[3],[4],[5], but none mentions the Korean investigation. The ISBN on the one cited source in the Chinese article is not valid (it gives me an entirely different book) and most of the information in the article seems to follow a narrative about her written by her daughter, so is non-independent and doesn't mention Korea. So, my questions are, 1) are there sources to confirm that "Liu Chin-yang" who went to Korea is Liu Qingyang of the Chinese WP article, 2) do you want to write it? I'd be very appreciative of any help to unravel the red links in the WIDF article and if we can figure out this one, there is another waiting to be solved... SusunW (talk) 16:26, 22 November 2023 (UTC) (Please always ping me)Reply[reply]
Hiya @SusunW, that's a really cool subject, thanks for leaving it on my talk :D I'm going to dig around a bit on the weekends. I would love to write the article but might take me quite some time. I'll post an update sometime soon after I've found something! Justiyaya 01:52, 23 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yay! Time is irrelevant if we are able to create a well sourced article on her. She's the kind of woman I find fascinating, independent, internationally engaged, and working to improve the lives of other women. If I can help with sources, context materials, or anything else please let me know. There are several articles about the Korean investigation in the WIDF article. I learned about the Chinese Marriage Law if 1950 when writing Umi Sardjono and there is quite a lengthy discussion of it in the sources for her article. (As I said before, usually one person I am writing about leads me to another. These WIDF women's interconnections are really interesting to me.) SusunW (talk) 13:43, 23 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@SusunW I've taken a look through the Chinese magazine and journal databases I can get access to and found a bit on her. I skimmed through them and saw very little documented for the 1950s. I do think it is the same person but I need to dig more to find sources mentioning her involvement. The signature on the second last page of the report does have the same characters (劉清揚).
Haven't had a lot of free time lately and been a bit sick. Hoping to finish research and perhaps an article on this before the new year though. Justiyaya 06:48, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry that you've been sick. Hope you are better soon. Glad to know my hunch was good. It'll be nice to fill in that gap in her biography. As you have time, no worries. SusunW (talk) 13:22, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Question from Reme77 (17:08, 24 November 2023)[edit]
Hi! Wikipedia gave me under your mentorship hahah, what would be the best way to translate an article? Or is it just as fine to make one on your own ? --Reme77 (talk) 17:08, 24 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Reme77! Which article would you like to translate? It's alright to make one from scratch, but is quite difficult and may not be possible (subjects require two reliable secondary sources providing significant coverage to them). WP:1st might be a good place to go :D Justiyaya 17:16, 24 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The song was covered by almost all major music magazines and major publications + some nation and region wide ones so I believe should be fine ? Reme77 (talk) 17:19, 24 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yup if that is the case then I think so too! I can't review Spanish language sources but coverage seems wide enough. Translation is probably a good choice, it seems nicely written. IXCat (the author of the es-wiki article) seems quite active here, not sure if she'd be willing to lend a hand. Anyways good luck and happy editing! Justiyaya 18:00, 24 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This was very fun! Thanks a lot for the suggestion hahah, technically my first article ! mostly adapted but not entirely soooo hahah (how do I add the contains translated text from the article tag?) Oliveira dos cen anosReme77 (talk) 23:54, 24 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Reme77, putting translated from the existing Spanish Wikipedia article at es:Oliveira dos cen anos; see its history for attribution. in any edit summary would work. You might want to copy edit the article a bit, the page contains WP:NPOV issues. Words like "countless legends" should not be included as to maintain a neutral tone and some other parts could do with some cleanup for clarity. This looks good for a first article, have fun editing and feel free to ask me more questions if you need anything! Justiyaya 04:21, 25 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from TpK2023 (14:11, 27 November 2023)[edit]
It's about Waldrada,
I believe Waldrada had a daughter named Waldrada like her mother before her. As her "of worms" suggests, her mother would be "of Orléans" & her mother "of Autun".
How do I make this suggestion? --TpK2023 (talk) 14:11, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @TpK2023, do you have any reliable sources backing up your claims? If so I might be able to fix it for you. Justiyaya 14:26, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No, no documentation I just got to thinking how it didn't make much sense to me that she was born in 801 and him unknown & have a child in 859.
First husband died in 834, seems like alot of years to me. Be nice if we knew when she died as that would help hugely.
And of course I could be totally wrong and that's how it happened.
Either way, I thank you for listening to me and my thoughts... TpK2023 (talk) 14:39, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@TpK2023 I'm assuming you are referring to Waldrada of Worms, the article is questionable at the best, and the statement you are referencing is unreferenced in the first place. If you would like to remove it that would work :D I'm honestly not even sure the subject exists, I can't find any mention of "Waldrada" in the only reference in the article, but would take a closer look later Justiyaya 01:13, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add ((NoACEMM)) to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:55, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

At the beginning of November 2023, the Growth team deployed the New Impact Module to all Wikipedias. We recently released a follow up improvement to how edit data was displayed based on editor feedback. [6]
When a mentor marked themselves as "Away", they were not getting their name assigned to new accounts when they returned. This has been fixed. [10]
We improved the message received by newcomers when their mentor quits, to reduce confusion. [11]
We worked on ensuring that all mentees are assigned to an active mentor. This required reassigning mentees with no mentors to a new mentor. We paused this as the clean-up script confused some editors. We will resume it when the identified blockers are resolved. [12]
It is now possible to create an Abuse Filter to prevent one user from signing up as a mentor. [13]
Following a talk page discussion, the Administrators' accountability policy has been updated to note that while it is considered best practice for administrators to have notifications (pings) enabled, this is not mandatory. Administrators who do not use notifications are now strongly encouraged to indicate this on their user page.

Question from VIHEMBA PAULUS (14:20, 2 January 2024)[edit]

I wrote an article about an association called the National African Students'Association, however I have noticed it is not yet published. May you please help me --VIHEMBA PAULUS (talk) 14:20, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @VIHEMBA PAULUS, I don't think the draft should be published at this moment. Thank you very much for your recent assistance on my new article! I saw on your user page that you are seeking to adopt new users and I am interested in knowing how that works. Hiya Kevin9217! It's been a bit since I've done adoption and it could really be anything. Some mentors go with quite an involved approach, offering tutorials and assignments on specific policy sections. I don't see that being really helpful for you. You could also just send me questions on whatever and I'll answer them or point you to someplace which can. What would you be interested in working on? Hello @Justiyaya,
Concerning the flag you placed on Tommy Prine "tone or style may not reflect the encyclopedic tone used on Wikipedia". I understand why the flag was placed. I updated some wording and removed other statements to make the article read more encyclopedic. Do you have other concerns or suggestions to fix the article? Gumballhead1of2 (talk) 09:12, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Gumballhead1of2 I think the more accurate tag would've been WP:NPOV, here's some examples that are still in the article:
of late folk legend is "legend" is subjective term? Maybe "influential"?
I think most new wikipedians (certainly me) had had this issue when we were getting started. Thanks for responding to feedback :D If you have any other questions regarding it, or just Wikipedia in general, feel free to message back! Justiyaya 12:10, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What is the process? Can I claim "ownership" or something like that?
I will make appropriate edits to bring the article up to date, as there have been many changes to the site.
Thanks! --The-artchive (talk) 22:00, 23 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@The-artchive Generally a bad idea to do so. You could not claim ownership of an article nor could you control what it says. You should not edit the page directly and should only suggest changes on the talk page, adding ((edit COI)). You should declare the conflict of interest on your talkpage with ((UserboxCOI|1=The Artchive)) and review the conflict of interest policy. Lastly, you might want to change your username. Usernames that are names of organizations are not allowed, something like <username> at The artchive would be, you can create a new account or change it by following WP:Changing usernames. This article is needed, Ubiquitous presently links to Omnipresent, which does not explain the word found in many Wikipedia articles. However, that link sending people to omnipresent needs to link to here. Once that happens, adjective and adverb can removed from the title. The system won't allow two ubiquitous articles. Starlighsky (talk) 13:56, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi Starlighsky then the procedure would be to open a discussion for Ubiquitous to be a inter-wiki redirect to wiktionary, not creating a new page on Wikipedia. I'm not exactly familiar with policy surrounding them, but I'm guessing it'd involve RfD… probably. I'll take a closer look tomorrow. Justiyaya 14:47, 24 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Starlighsky I've opened a discussion here. Could I tag both Ubiquitous (adverb or adjective) and Ubiquitous (adjective) for deletion (per WP:Wikipedia is not a dictionary)? Feel free to place the sentences in Wiktionary (I'm not really familiar with them). Justiyaya 12:01, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ubiquitous (adjective) is needed because it corrects the defective redirect that was going to omnipresence.
Here is my line of reasoning: Ubiquitous is needed as an article because it helps people to upgrade the article ubiquitous computing, which needs our help at the moment. Starlighsky (talk) 13:55, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Starlighsky But Wikipedia is not a dictionary and thus articles like them should be imported to Wiktionary or made a redirect to them. I see that but the way to solve it is not in making something new, but to engage in discussion at the RfD. Justiyaya 13:58, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I added the information from the article to Wiktionary Starlighsky (talk) 14:56, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Starlighsky Would you be okay with me requesting deletion of the page then? Justiyaya 14:58, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I am okay with it, even though it is embarrassing.
How do I edit the redirect article for the word? i am having trouble finding it. Starlighsky (talk) 15:02, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The more I think about it, though, the article is easier to read here than it is on Wiktionary. The information is needed here because the Ubiquitous Computing article needs a lot of help in terms of better editing. The more editors have a clear view of the improved version of the term, the more editors likely able to edit the computing article and related articles. Starlighsky (talk) 15:10, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Starlighsky I'll figure it out if you would like me to. Its not really embarrassing, I've had few of mine deleted too.
I would agree that a it is easier to read here, but that's not what Wikipedia is for. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a dictionary. Other improvements could be made inside the article if you feel like its really unclear. Justiyaya 16:01, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There is definitely a need for an article that redirects go to for the correct definition. Editors creating links are not going to see Wiktionary terms as options for links. To me, the lack of the proper terminology in links is affecting editorial quality. An article on ubiquitous in medicine is separate and distinct to the article on omnipresense which discusses theology. Starlighsky (talk) 19:12, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Question from Neilhuse (02:45, 25 January 2024)[edit]
Hello, nice to meet you! I wanted to create a Wikipedia page about a co-worker, business owner, entrepreneur and philanthropist. How do I go about creating creating a new page for him? --Neilhuse (talk) 02:45, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello, the article isn't about myself. It's about a co-worker. Neilhuse (talk) 13:15, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Neilhuse I am aware, most of the same advice applies, you'd still have a conflict of interest to the subject, you'd still have to work with the notability guidelines. Most instances of this I've seen would lead to no results, I'd strongly discourage it. Justiyaya 13:20, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
ok, thanks Neilhuse (talk) 13:20, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello,
I have gone to this school before, so just today I started working on an article for it. It may not seem like much, but it's a start. I'll improve it tomorrow, as it is very late for me right now. Thank you for the tag, I know my article is basic. I'm a newer editor to Wikipedia, so if I make a mistake, feel free to correct me. C0smoNauticalMile (talk) 04:51, 28 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @C0smoNauticalMile, its best to review the notability guidelines before continuing with this article. If you've gone to the school before, keep WP:Verifiability mind while writing the article. Justiyaya 05:00, 28 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
C0smoNauticalMile, I've raised the same concern--with rare exceptions, elementary and middle schools are not considered notable enough to merit encyclopedia articles. 2601:19E:4180:6D50:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 05:02, 28 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oh, sorry, I didn't know. I just thought that, since my other local schools had their own articles, and that I know a lot about my own school, I would write an article for it. However, I do see your point that it is not common for there to be plentiful information and importance in elementary/middle schools, compared to high schools or colleges. 😞 C0smoNauticalMile (talk) 05:24, 28 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@C0smoNauticalMile I'll move the page to draft space for now, if it meets the requirements, then feel free to move it back with the sources added. Justiyaya 07:33, 28 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Alright, I'll take it from there, and improve it until I've made it proper enough for a review. Thank you. C0smoNauticalMile (talk) 17:15, 28 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Notification: Feedback request service is down[edit]
Thanks for the speedy, was afraid of placing a CSD tag myself just a few minutes after creation but it was a good call. ChaotıċEnby(talk · contribs) 12:00, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Chaotic Enby Saw their user talk and I assumed they've only come to advertise, think they removed most of the promotional parts now though. Justiyaya 12:18, 29 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I am very sorry. This article is also a test post for translation. If you have any problems with this article, please feel free to delete it. I agree with your policy. Thank you. Sakura Torch (talk) 11:15, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sakura Torch no worries, I didn't know that it was a test, I just thought it had notability concerns. Feel free to start another version using the article wizard if you wanted to write an article on the subject. Please check if the subject meets the notability guidelines first though. Justiyaya 11:21, 30 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Glad to be in touch again. I would like to know if there are any Wikipedia tools which can be used to create election infoboxes or custom election maps. I am thinking of one where states can be filled in.
If not, do you know any general tools that you are aware of? Thanks and I look forward to hearing back! Kevin9217 (talk) 03:38, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Kevin9217 I'm not great with this, I'm sure Template:Infobox election would work for most elections but I don't think there is any tool really good at working with templates. (in here and here at least)

I'm creating my first article on the Saxophonist Jamie Anderson. How do I save my drafts before I am ready to submit for review? --Saxman53 (talk) 18:11, 7 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hiya @Saxman53, you save them by publishing the edit, or alternatively offline. Please review the messages on your talk page regarding why the draft is declined and resubmit when you are ready. (there's also significant tonal issues, see WP:NPOV) Justiyaya 00:05, 8 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
