A salai (Punjabi: ਸਲਾਈ) also known as a baaj (Punjabi: ਬਾਜ) is a specially-designed needle for turbans that is used by Sikhs for tucking hair from inside the turban and is also used for smoothing out folds.[1][2][3][4] There are various ranges of salai needles used by Sikhs.[citation needed]
Baaj is 10cm long hair pin used to secure loose or short dreads from popping out of the turban and also, to straighten the drapes (Ladh) of the turban. The pin is then inserted into the drapes, kept concealed and is taken out only if there's a need to fix up the turban.
