Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU; 上海交通大学) is a public university in Shanghai, China. It is affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China. The university is part of Project 211, Project 985, and the Double First-Class Construction.[6]
It was founded as the Nanyang Public School in 1896 by an imperial edict from the Guangxu Emperor and became an industrial school. It became the Shanghai School of Jiao Tong University in 1921 and rapidly developed between 1927 and 1936. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the university continued classes in the Shanghai French Concession (1937-1940) and then in Chongqing (1940-1945). The university started to recover after the war, but declined as the Chinese Civil War intensified. Shanghai Jiao Tong University is now one of the most prominent engineering schools in China.[7]
The university has 33 schools, 12 affiliated hospitals, 2 affiliated medical research institutes, 23 directly affiliated units, and 5 directly affiliated enterprises.[8]
The earliest predecessor of the school was founded in 1896 and was originally named Nanyang Public School (南洋公学). The school was renamed Nanyang University Hall (南洋大学堂) in 1911, National Chiao Tung University (国立交通大学) in 1929, and Chiao Tung University (交通大学) in 1949.[9]
In 1957, the school moved westward and the Jiaotong University was divided into the Shanghai part and the Xi'an part. In 1959, the Shanghai part of Jiaotong University adopted the name "Shanghai Jiaotong University". In 1999, the then Shanghai Agricultural College (上海农学院) was merged into the school.[9]
In 2005, the former Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the former Shanghai Second Medical University (上海第二医科大学) merged to establish the new Shanghai Jiao Tong University.[9][10]
In 2023, the university announced that its office of the president had merged into the university's Chinese Communist Party committee, which would directly administer the university henceforth.[11]
