Proposed deletion |
On this page, the deletion or merging of templates and modules, except as noted below, is discussed. To propose the renaming of a template or templates, use Wikipedia:Requested moves.
The majority of deletion and merger proposals concerning pages in the template namespace and module namespace should be listed on this page. However, there are a few exceptions:
Templates should not be nominated if the issue can be fixed by normal editing. Instead, you should edit the template to fix its problems. If the template is complex and you don't know how to fix it, WikiProject Templates may be able to help.
Templates for which none of these apply may be deleted by consensus here. If a template is being misused, consider clarifying its documentation to indicate the correct use, or informing those that misuse it, rather than nominating it for deletion. Initiate a discussion on the template talk page if the correct use itself is under debate.
To list a template for deletion or merging, follow this three-step process. The use of Twinkle (explained below) is strongly recommended, as it automates and simplifies these steps. Note that the "Template:" prefix should not be included anywhere when carrying out these steps (unless otherwise specified).
Step | Instructions |
---|---|
I: Tag the template. | Add one of the following codes to the top of the template page:
Note:
Multiple templates: If you are nominating multiple related templates, choose a meaningful title for the discussion (like "American films by decade templates"). Tag every template with Related categories: If including template-populated tracking categories in the TfD nomination, add TemplateStyles pages: The above templates will not work on TemplateStyles pages. Instead, add a CSS comment to the top of the page:
|
II: List the template at TfD. | Follow this link to edit today's TfD log.
Add this text to the top of the list:
If the template has had previous TfDs, you can add Use an edit summary such as Multiple templates: If this is a deletion proposal involving multiple templates, use the following: ((subst:Tfd2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be deleted. ~~~~)) You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters If this is a merger proposal involving more than two templates, use the following: ((subst:Tfm2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|with=main template (optional)|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~)) You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters Related categories: If this is a deletion proposal involving a template and a category populated solely by templates, add this code after the ((subst:Catfd2|category name)) |
III: Notify users. | Please notify the creator of the template nominated (as well as the creator of the target template, if proposing a merger). It is helpful to also notify the main contributors of the template that you are nominating. To find them, look in the page history or talk page of the template. Then, add one of the following:
to the talk pages of the template creator (and the creator of the other template for a merger) and the talk pages of the main contributors. It is also helpful to make any interested WikiProjects aware of the discussion. To do that, make sure the template's talk page is tagged with the banners of any relevant WikiProjects; please consider notifying any of them that do not use Article alerts. Multiple templates: There is no template for notifying an editor about a multiple-template nomination: please write a personal message in these cases. |
Consider adding any templates you nominate for TfD to your watchlist. This will help ensure that the TfD tag is not removed.
While it is sufficient to list a template for discussion at TfD (see above), nominators and others sometimes want to attract more attention from and participation by informed editors. All such efforts must comply with Wikipedia's guideline against biased canvassing.
To encourage participation by less experienced editors, please avoid Wikipedia-specific abbreviations in the messages you leave about the discussion, link to any relevant policies or guidelines, and link to the TfD discussion page itself. If you are recommending that a template be speedily deleted, please give the criterion that it meets.
WikiProjects are groups of editors that are interested in a particular subject or type of editing. If the article is within the scope of one or more WikiProjects, they may welcome a brief, neutral note on their project's talk page(s) about the TfD. You can use ((Tfdnotice))
for this.
Tagging the nominated template's talk page with a relevant Wikiproject's banner will result in the template being listed in that project's Article Alerts automatically, if they subscribe to the system. For instance, tagging a template with ((WikiProject Physics)) will list the discussion in Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Article alerts.
While not required, it is generally considered courteous to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the template and its talkpage that you are nominating for discussion. To find the creator and main contributors, look in the page history or talk page.
At this point, you've done all you need to do as nominator. Sometime after seven days have passed, someone else will either close the discussion or, where needed, "relist" it for another seven days of discussion. (That "someone" may not be you, the nominator.)
Once you have submitted a template here, no further action is necessary on your part. If the nomination is successful it will be added to the Holding Cell until the change is implemented. There is no requirement for nominators to be part of the implementation process, but they are allowed to if they so wish.
Also, consider adding any templates you nominate to your watchlist. This will help ensure that your nomination tag is not mistakenly or deliberately removed.
Twinkle is a convenient tool that can perform many of the posting and notification functions automatically, with fewer errors and missed steps than manual editing. Twinkle does not notify WikiProjects, although many of them have automatic alerts. It is helpful to notify any interested WikiProjects that don't receive alerts, but this has to be done manually.
Anyone can join the discussion, but please understand the deletion policy and explain your reasoning.
People will sometimes also recommend subst or subst and delete and similar. This means the template text should be "merged" into the articles that use it. Depending on the content, the template page may then be deleted; if preserving the edit history for attribution is desirable, it may be history-merged with the target article or moved to mainspace and redirected.
Templates are rarely orphaned—that is, removed from pages that transclude them—before the discussion is closed. A list of open discussions eligible for closure can be found at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Old unclosed discussions.
Administrators should read the closing instructions before closing a nomination. Note that WP:XFDcloser semi-automates this process and ensures all of the appropriate steps are taken.

Propose merging Template:ABU TV Song Festival 2012, Template:ABU TV Song Festival 2013, Template:ABU TV Song Festival 2014, Template:ABU TV Song Festival 2015 and Template:ABU TV Song Festival 2016 with Template:ABU TV Song Festival.
The "countries" section of these 5 year templates are the same links as in the main Template:ABU TV Song Festival. The "artist" and "song" sections are either unlinked text or red links and it's unlikely that the songs or artists would be notable enough for future creation. Full meaningful navigation is provided by Template:ABU TV Song Festival, the merge target. I classified this as a merge, however deleting these 5 templates would have the same outcome given the overlap. Grk1011 (talk) 17:33, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

Propose merging Template:ABU Radio Song Festival 2012, Template:ABU Radio Song Festival 2014 and Template:ABU Radio Song Festival 2015 with Template:ABU Radio Song Festival.
The "countries" section of these 3 year templates are the same links as in the main Template:ABU Radio Song Festival. The "artist" and "song" sections are either unlinked text or red links. With no subsequent events scheduled to take place, there is no chance that additional articles could be added to make these helpful. Full meaningful navigation is provided by Template:ABU Radio Song Festival, the merge target. I classified this as a merge, however deleting these 3 templates would have the same outcome given the overlap. Grk1011 (talk) 15:51, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
Only contains one link (the eventual overall winner), so serves no purpose whatsoever as a navigation template. Richard3120 (talk) 15:41, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
All of these navboxes, covering Eurovision Young Dancers or Eurovision Young Musicians do not aid in navigation and are largely duplicated by the main templates: Template:Eurovision Young Dancers and Template:Eurovision Young Musicians. The only difference is that each one also includes red links or redirects to the specific performers for each country, each year. These red links and redirects have little chance of being created in the future, thus navigation is already provided through the main templates. These templates were likely created in an attempt to mirror Eurovision navboxes like Template:Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest, however both Young Dancers and Musicians are not nearly as popular as the song contest and will never have a similar quantity or type of articles that would create a similar need to navigate between. Grk1011 (talk) 15:11, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
These navboxes were created under the assumption that these countries would compete more than once in the event. Since that did not materialize and no new events are taking place (since 2015), there is no chance that these will grow. Additionally, the four main articles of each navbox were recently redirected for the same reason. Each navbox largely consists of crossed out links to events that the subjects did not participate in. Grk1011 (talk) 21:01, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Only one instance of this event 5 years ago (2017) and subsequent editions never materialized. Navbox has consisted largely of red links since its creation in 2016. Its parent article has also been a redirect since 2016. Grk1011 (talk) 18:45, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Out of the many links that are (or used to be) part of this navbox, only 3 articles exist: Eurovision Dance Contest, Eurovision Dance Contest 2008, and Eurovision Dance Contest 2009. The rest are redirects. With the contest canceled over 12 years ago, it is unlikely that more articles would be created to make this navbox helpful. Grk1011 (talk) 18:33, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

Three links. Fails NENAN. Four articles under Category:Pecos League ballparks still wouldn't pass for navigational purposes for this navbox. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 00:38, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Fails NENAN. No links outside the main article minus the Greg Tagert and the stadium articles. Everything else is either a link to the team's article sections or general baseball article links. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 00:31, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
All fail basic navigation. All link to one or two articles outside the main team article in the title. The rest are links to articles sections and categories. Links to personnel should not count as those are just articles about former MLB players that have played a role with the team, but not enough to justify keeping the templates because there is no overall connection to the team itself. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 00:24, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
Contains only one article that is related to the relations between the two nations, Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea. Everything else is a broad general topic. Nothing directly related to the relations between The Philippines and South Korea. One relations article does it exist and that is List of ambassadors of the Philippines to South Korea. Looking from the mainspace category, you don't have much to form a navbox. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 16:45, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

Appears to have been moved from the Draft namespace by its creator. I admit I'm not sure what this is supposed to be (based on its usage, perhaps an attempt at a userbox?), so bringing it for discussion. Kinu t/c 10:11, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
This template is unused, and it seems unlikely that it could ever have a viable use. I can only think of two contexts in which someone might want to use it.
One of those potential contexts is to "hide text" that is somehow sensitive and only checkusers should know; but that would be a security problem as the content would still be visible in the page's wikitext, so such sensitive content should be shared using whatever methods checkusers normally use to privately communicate with each other.
The other situation would be when placing convenience links on a page that are only functional for checkusers (i.e. links to pages that need checkuser-level permissions to access). However, the only real context in which such links would be useful would be that of linking to a user with helper links (in the style of ((userlinks))), but specialised for checkuser-related contexts. However, the checkuser permission only does one thing, so there's only one checkuser-related context (WP:SPI). There's already an existing template that's used there for that purpose, ((checkuser)), and any situation which would want to generate checkuser-specific helper links should probably go via that, meaning that this template is redundant (((checkuser)) is not written in terms of this template).
As such, deleting ((if checkuser)) is likely for the best to a) simplify the lists of namespace/user-detection templates, making it easier to find the right one, and b) discourage people from attempting to use this template inappropriately. --ais523 07:06, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

Per WP:NENAN. The albums listed in the template previously had articles, but all have since been redirected to musician's page as non-notable releases. The template now has no navigational value because all links go to the same place. Also, the template now only appears at the bottom of the musician's article. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (TALK|CONTRIBS) 01:48, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

Similar to the Sri Lanka templates that were deleted on April 12 I nominated. Don't see the need for navboxes for every certain period in Thailand's history. All of these are primarily just clutter for listing every leader and institution that relates to the specific period. But these fall under template creep when there are other templates covering the scope for all the articles under the events section in all three navboxes. Template:History of Thailand navbox can probably cover the scope. But these navbox is broader for its subject matter. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 20:23, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

Propose merging Template:Second Ladies and Gentlemen of Colombia with Template:Second Spouse.
Identical templates used for the same people – created by the same editor who clearly got into a tangle with the naming of the navbox and decided to create a second version without deleting the first one. Would probably lean to keeping "Second Ladies and Gentlemen of Colombia" as the name of the merged template because this is the one already used in the articles, although frankly none of the included subjects are notable and should probably be deleted or merged to the articles for their spouses, ultimately making this template redundant. But that's for another discussion. Richard3120 (talk) 19:40, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

((The Fellowship of the Ring/Plot summary))'s sole use is to store article text, namely the plot summary for The Fellowship of the Ring, for the purposes of transcluding onto the main FOTR and LOTR pages (in direct contravention to WP:TG). The template's task doesn't need a template; a labeled section transclusion from the FOTR article to elsewhere will also do the same thing without one. I thus propose to substitute the template back onto The Fellowship of the Ring, delete this template, and carry out the desired transclusion as a labeled transclusion. — Ceso femmuin mbolgaig mbung, mellohi! These templates are used in only a single article each. It is highly unlikely for this template to be used on any other articles. Per WP:TMP, the template namespace should not be used to store article content.

redirects to ((Infobox settlement)); but ((Infobox protected area)) might be more appropriate in some cases. Either way, we don't need a separate new infobox just for a dozen regions of Germany (or any other individual country). Relisting comment: Neither opinion given after the previous relist actually addressed the question of a potential target for a subst-only translation wrapper (as proposed by the nominator). This is a helper template, not a standalone entity.

If this is needed, then Template:Harry Potter translation count should be created where with a parameter you get the wanted value. So something like ((Harry Potter translation count|total))
. There is certainly no need for 3 templates for this and a user page should not used here at all. Gonnym (talk) 11:01, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
While this is a user-page, it is transcluded into main space articles. There is also no need for this to actually be a template as each team's table should be inside the relevant article. Subst each club's table into their article. Gonnym (talk) 10:53, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

These are single-use templates, contravening both H:T, that templates are for repetitive material that might need to show up on a larger number of articles or pages
, and WP:TG, that templates should not normally be used to store article text, as this makes it more difficult to edit the content
. These are the same reasons why Template:Results of the 2022 Australian federal election (House of Representatives) was deleted. Template:Transclusion was similarly deleted, as it was used to justify their existence, as they are used alledegly "to avoid disruption and unnecessary server load" (which were rejected in TfD:Transclusion). This is a relisting of a subset of a list proposed on 19 June, following the closing recommendation that the templates should be nominated in similar groups.

do we place all the information into one article and run afoul of deletionists wanting to delete it because it is too long, or do we use templates to shorten the article length by storing that data in templates?
Once we make it a policy
be used to store article text, as this makes it more difficult to edit the content(WP:TG).
a larger number of articles or pages(H:T), which as Joseph2302 said,
doesn't warrant a template, and they're still being
used to store article text, with the intent of making
it more difficult to edit the content, as it was made explicit in the Template:Transclusion, in contravention to WP:TG. If the consensus to delete the Template:Results of the 2022 Australian federal election (House of Representatives) has any bearing, these should be deleted by the same rationale, with the list articles holding the content, and its sections transcluded to the prose articles, e.g.:
repetitive material that might need to show up on a larger number of articles or pages(H:T)). They should, however, insofar as they hold actual content (rather than a function or boilerplate msg), be transcluded from a main article to the other 2-3 articles (WP:TRANS), so as to not
make it more difficult to edit the content(WP:TG). — Guarapiranga ☎ 22:10, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

Template already exists at Template:User Saraiki for these set of users. - Anjana Larka 13:31, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
This is currently just a wrapper of a subst version of Template:Saved book. However, if you look at its current transclusions, such as at Alphonse Daudet and Lycée Michelet (Vanves), you'll see that the usages there are incorrectly used as citations (which are broken). Books are created much less now so there is no real need to have a wrapper template. Additionally, this seems to have either gone of out sync with the main template or completely changed at some point as the parameters in the documentation aren't supported at all. Making this a red link will help correcting these citations when they happen (redirecting is less ideal as "book" could reasonably be more than just a citation template). Propose merging Template:Import-blanktable with Template:Row hover highlight.
Both templates serve the same purpose. — Guarapiranga ☎ 21:32, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
It seems uncontroversial that having highlight-on-hover behaviour is useful for at least some tables – generally speaking, tables that are being used to hold tabular data (as opposed to being used for some other purpose) benefit from it. As such, we either need to merge it into the main "wikitable" CSS class, or else split "wikitable" into two (together with WP:MOS guidelines as to when to use each version). Creating a template to do the same work via TemplateStyles and editing it onto every page indiviually is a clever short-term workaround, but a bad long-term solution to the problem – we'll end up with a range of different methods of row-highlighting tables and it'll be harder to move over to a coherent system once the software starts working again.
It's quite plausible that the situation will be fixed by changes to MediaWiki itself; however, if a short-term solution is desirable before then, it should surely be done via site CSS rather than via editing a template onto every page individually, and thus neither of the templates under discussion should really exist. (It is possible that we'll want "Wikipedia's own" data table CSS class with row highlighting, rather than using one which was incidentally part of MediaWiki, in order to be able to optimise it for usage on an encyclopedia; but in that case, we can do a one-time replacement of the CSS class name on articles using a bot, which has to be better than adding a template to every page and then removing the template again once the CSS is fixed properly.) --ais523 22:55, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
Merge into MediaWiki:Common.css and delete both. WP:TemplateStyles are sufficient to support whatever is going on with the relevant templates and should always be preferred to Common.css for the general rationale behind TemplateStyles (see prior link) as well as my project to remove Common.css styles. Common.css should be reserved exclusively for modifications to site chrome.
The functionality was widely usedis an incorrect assessment. It was used by some 300 pages or so. Widely used would be much more than that. --Izno (talk) 23:44, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
It probably should be used on almost every table on WikipediaI don't think this is supported solely by the fact that essentially one user has added this class/styles to these 300 some odd pages +- template links. There remains no reason to add this to all tables (all
wikitable
tables I presume, for obvious reasons like ((infobox)) opposing its general use), and if you think there is, you may submit the patch to the developers that does so. There remain sufficiently many cases where it should not be employed, so I anticipate it being shot down for that reason alone (because Wikimedians are bad at using tables as tables). This is an excellent use case for TemplateStyles. --Izno (talk) 00:07, 20 June 2022 (UTC)mw-datatable
as the above task would have been avoided if we were using our own classes. Secondly, I would generally support restricting row hovers to wikitable
class tables (perhaps with some name row-hover
). --Izno (talk) 23:44, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
I would not reference
