All of these navboxes, covering Eurovision Young Dancers or Eurovision Young Musicians do not aid in navigation and are largely duplicated by the main templates: Template:Eurovision Young Dancers and Template:Eurovision Young Musicians. The only difference is that each one also includes red links or redirects to the specific performers for each country, each year. These red links and redirects have little chance of being created in the future, thus navigation is already provided through the main templates. These templates were likely created in an attempt to mirror Eurovision navboxes like Template:Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest, however both Young Dancers and Musicians are not nearly as popular as the song contest and will never have a similar quantity or type of articles that would create a similar need to navigate between. Template:If checkuser

This template is unused, and it seems unlikely that it could ever have a viable use. I can only think of two contexts in which someone might want to use it.

One of those potential contexts is to "hide text" that is somehow sensitive and only checkusers should know; but that would be a security problem as the content would still be visible in the page's wikitext, so such sensitive content should be shared using whatever methods checkusers normally use to privately communicate with each other.

The other situation would be when placing convenience links on a page that are only functional for checkusers (i.e. links to pages that need checkuser-level permissions to access). However, the only real context in which such links would be useful would be that of linking to a user with helper links (in the style of ((userlinks))), but specialised for checkuser-related contexts. However, the checkuser permission only does one thing, so there's only one checkuser-related context (WP:SPI). There's already an existing template that's used there for that purpose, ((checkuser)), and any situation which would want to generate checkuser-specific helper links should probably go via that, meaning that this template is redundant (((checkuser)) is not written in terms of this template).

As such, deleting ((if checkuser)) is likely for the best to a) simplify the lists of namespace/user-detection templates, making it easier to find the right one, and b) discourage people from attempting to use this template inappropriately. --ais523 07:06, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

• Delete. Unmaintainable and serves no apparent navigational purpose. (And while WP:NAVBOX does not have the force of policy, this falls short of most of the criteria suggested therein.) Restricting it to genera as proposed above could be a cromulent solution, but still will create all manner of maintenance headaches given the current level of taxonomic churn. • I think there's more general potential for the tree of life area to have navboxes that succinctly summarize a specific clade. This... this template doesn't do that. So, at a minimum, strip it down to genera. I defer to experts about the general utility for the template, but I will note that 'churn' is not really a sufficient reason to delete a navbox. But these fall under template creep when there are other templates covering the scope for all the articles under the events section in all three navboxes. • Tentative keep. While I would have agreed with deletion for the aforementioned Sri Lanka templates, I don't think they are comparable because the Sri Lanka ones were based on individual years, while these are historical periods corresponding to Wikipedia's coverage of the topic. While I do think that the first two could do with some major redesign as they are currently overlinked and waste too much space, I would defend the last one, which I created, as it assists the reader in navigating between important topics within the topic. While for example the 2013–2014 Thai political crisis may already have a navbox linking to other major protests since 1973, a reader approaching the topic from an interest in contemporary Thai history would be better served by navigational aids to articles that are relevant to the period, e.g. those about the protesters ("People's Democratic Reform Committee"), the prime minister they were protesting against (Yingluck Shinawatra), the election disrupted by the protests (2014 Thai general election), and the coup and junta that followed (2014 Thai coup d'état (admittedly already included in the coups and protests navbox) and National Council for Peace and Order). These are not easily accessible via the category system, and Template:History of Thailand navbox is for navigation between the main articles in the history of Thailand series and not meant for navigation between topics within each period. I get your point, but why can't the main history navbox and Template:History of Thailand sidebar be enough? At least for larger or more main history of Thailand subjects. Even if these two templates don't link to the articles one is reading, they are normally added due to their relation to the broader history-related subject. I don't see any other templates like this for say Cambodia, U.S., U.K. And there should be consistency with these types of navboxes. If the history of one country is going to be covered in this way, then the same should apply to all other nations as well. I did not make the "not used" argument. I ran a search on Wikipedia to see how many times the source is used. Four: List of mayors of Columbus, Ohio (a "For Further Reading" suggestion), Green Lawn Cemetery (Columbus, Ohio), AIA Columbus, and White–Haines Building. There potentially may be a fifth if a page moves from a sandbox to article-space. It seems inappropriate to create a template that has to be maintained in order to handle just four citations across some 6.5 million articles. • I really don't I agree with the "no plausible other uses" part of this. Surely each one could be used to show examples of different situations that can happen in a game, not to mention showing the board at critical points in notable matches. I would say that any of these with a current transclusion should be an automatic keep, while if any have been sitting around without a use for too long, it might be okay to userfy them, as the main builder/maintainer seems to have future uses in mind. In an ideal world, the ((chess diagram)) template would be more versatile, but until that functionality is built, these kinds of templates are going to be necessary for improving the quality of non-European games' articles. So I'd encourage User:Yevrowl to start getting all of these into article space, and to hit up a place like WT:WikiProject Board and table games for getting proper use of these templates. That is correct, I am unlikely to use this particular template elsewhere, but I do not know how to make a reusable version of this.

I do not think templates should always be reusable. This one combines the subpages ((SWASTHA articles)), ((SWASTHA articles/top)), and ((SWASTHA articles/list)), and I do not find it simple to substitute three pages into one. Also if someone wanted to copy this model then I think the multiple pages make this easier for copy and adapt.

I have other designs for language templates such as on meta:Wiki99/LGBT+ which uses one version, and meta:Module:Wiki99 which is another version I am developing.

The point of these templates is to have a way to coordinate multilingual cross-wiki projects. Usually Meta is the place for that and maybe it will be in the future, but I think it is okay to have an example in English Wikipedia to experiment with the idea and show it off. If I understand you correctly, you have two objections: 1) that I created these under my user page and 2) that I created three of them rather than integrating them all into a single parameterized template. Is that correct?

My thought process, I guess, was that creating something so very specific under 'Template:' was inappropriate since it has no generalizable use to any other article. It is quite useful for this specific article as these numbers are repeated multiple times throughout the text and it has been common that when the numbers need to be updated, instances are overlooked creating confusing inconsistencies. Given that transcludes from User: are not banned (obviously) and even acknowledged in the first paragraph of Wikipedia:Template_namespace from my (admittedly probably imperfect understanding) it seemed that my user page was more appropriate than cluttering up Template: with something of such limited use. I'm still not exactly sure why it's a problem.

With respect to three vs. one template: I understand that objection within Template:; I'm not sure why it would matter within User:. I was preferring to make them as simple and editable as possible, should someone else besides me be trying to update them.

• Keep After doing a lot of reading and trying my best to understand the guidelines and issues here, I believe this is a perfectly legitimate and appropriate use.
  1. These are User: space pages that do not meet. If they were not transcluded to Main: would we be having this conversation? The issue is not about deletion, it's about the appropriateness of transcluding them into a Main: article.
  2. There is no a priori reason that User: space pages cannot be transcluded to Main: space. It obviously is permitted despite the fact there is the capacity to prohibit it. Wikipedia:Template namespace explicitly says: "Although the Template namespace is used for storing most templates, it is possible to transclude and substitute from other namespaces, and so some template pages are placed in other namespaces, such as the User namespace." I have not found any specific guidelines as to when it is or is not appropriate to use transcludes from other namespaces—if it exists and I haven't found it, please do point it out.
  3. These obviously don't belong in Template: space because they are not generally useful. That doesn't mean that they are not useful—they are useful for Harry Potter in translation and specifically to me as a major contributor and the one who has historically maintained this number.
  4. User: space is appropriate given that the primary utility of the templates are to an individual contributor on a specific page. The use is inline with Wikipedia:User pages guidelines which include Useful links, tools and scripts—I consider this a tool that I use to make editing these numbers more transparent. Yet, they remain universally editable and could be easily replaced if I vanished.
  5. To @Pppery's point: the fact that the numbers have not changed since I created these templates to assist in maintaining the article does not mean that the templates are not fulfilling their stated purpose, nor that the numbers don't change or will not change in the future. More troubling is that it appears to be a form of WP:OWNership of the article. New editors trying to improve the article will encounter strange wikicode ((User:Shaav/HPTransTotalCount)) in place of what they expect to be a number.
