ViX is an over-the-topstreaming service owned and operated by TelevisaUnivision.[1][2][3] The service primarily shows content from TelevisaUnivision and other third-party content providers, including television series, movies, and sports programming. Originally launched as PrendeTV on March 30, 2021,[4][5] the service was expanded and rebranded as ViX on March 31, 2022.
History
VIX started back in 2013 as GOTV (Granier Otero TV), a project to transfer all the programming from Radio Caracas Televisión of Venezuela into digital format. In 2014 GOTV became "Pongalo" where the platform was created after the entire content of RCTV was transferred into digital format, novelas such as Juana la Virgen, Betty la fea, Kassandra among many others. In 2017, Pongalo dissolved after removing Jorge Granier as a CEO due to mismanagement, it was a consensus among investors. The project was acquired by VIX (Batanga) and then sold to Univision under the same name.
On January 13, 2021, Univision said that PrendeTV would be launched in the first quarter of 2021.[6][7][8] On March 30, 2021, Univision launched their ad-supported streaming service.[9] On May 3, 2021, Univision announced that it had acquired the television rights for Euro 2020 for PrendeTV and TUDN and Univision also acquired rights for Brazilian and Argentine leagues.[10][11][12][13] TelevisaUnivision will launch a new streaming service by bringing together PrendeTV, ViX, Univision Now, and Blim TV under one name in 2022.[14] The premium tier, ViX+, which includes premium series & films, along with live sporting events, including FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 for Mexican audiences, launched on July 21, 2022.[15]
Programing
ViX's programing includes classic TV, documentaries, television series, films, and sports programming and telenovelas from Televisa's telenovela library.[16][17]
These programs, even though ViX has announced them as ViX Originals, are programs that have been aired in different countries, and ViX has bought exclusive distribution rights to stream them in other various countries. They may be available on ViX in their home territory and other markets where ViX does not have the first run license, without the ViX Original label, some time after their first-run airing on their original broadcaster.
